Dreadbox Medusa

Hybrid Analogue & Digital Synthesizer and Grid Sequencer

Compare

The Dreadbox Medusa is a Hybrid Analogue and Digital Synthesizer developed in conjunction with Polyend, that blends the best of Dreadbox analogue circuitry with Polyend controllers and sequencing in one unique powerhouse synthesizer.
Dreadbox are well known for their rich, powerful analogue synthesizers, Medusa is no different. Its synthesis architecture comprises of three analogue oscillators, three digital oscillators, an analogue multimode filter, five envelopes, five LFO’s and a wealth of modulation routing options.
Polyend developed the three digital oscillators, which provide the same waveforms as the analogue oscillators, but they can also serve as wavetables if desired, allowing you to layer rich analogue waveforms, with glassy textural wavetables for very rich and harmonically interesting results.
And with up to 6 note “polyphony” you can make anything from devastating unison basses, through to lush atmospheric pads and textures and store them across 256 onboard preset storage locations.
Where Medusa starts to really come to life is when you start to play with the grid. This grid is made up of 64 pads, which are velocity sensitive, but also polyphonically touch sensitive in the XYZ axis. The grid is freely configurable and can be modified to handle a variety of different features.
For starters, it can be used as a playing surface, where you can define the scale of the keys and also the layout, so if you only want to play C minor (for example) then only those notes will be provided. The grid can also be used as a step sequencer with up to 64 steps, with each step having different parameters locked to each step.
Each parameter locked step can consist of note & parameter information or you can define the setting of the entire synth voice, letting you make complex routings and patches very quickly and effortlessly.
All of this sonic complexity would be impossible without a well designed UI, and that’s exactly what’s onboard. There’s a dedicated OLED display for the grid and the digital synthesis settings, and a second OLED display for controlling your LFO parameters.
All the module is simply click and assign, meaning those five envelopes and LFO’s can be quickly assigned to build very complex modulation strings.
Medusa is a refreshing addition to the synthesizer industry, it’s incredibly forward thinking and an absolute pleasure to play and work with. It’s really quite unlike anything you’ve ever heard before.
