500-series inductor EQ designed by Rupert Neve
The Rupert Neve Designs 551 is an inductor 3-band EQ for 500-Series format designed by Rupert Neve himself.
The 551 by Rupert Neve Designs features custom-wound inductors, transformer-coupled inputs and outputs, and Class-A gain blocks and delivers the thick and powerful lows contrasted by sweet highs that we’ve come to expect from Rupert Neve’s designs.
Inspired by the Shelford series, the 3-band EQ features Rupert’s favourite vintage EQ designs. The Low Frequency band hints towards one of Neve’s most successful vintage EQ but can now be used as a shelf or bell curve adding punch, dimension and further control of your low-end. The inductor midrange is the perfect to add presence while sweetening vocals while the proportional Q response makes it ideal for reducing problematic frequencies. The High Frequency band merges the old with the new combining inductor circuitry with capacitors, bringing beautiful vintage tones but with the controls required by modern standards. The High-Pass Filter is a 12dB/octave with 80Hz fixed frequency.
Both high and low bands can be switched from shelf to band curves and provide 15dB of boost or cut. The high-band can be switched between 8kHz and 16kHz while the low frequency band covers frequencies including 35Hz, 60 Hz, 100Hz or 220Hz. The midrange band boasts 6 frequency positions covering 200Hz, 350Hz, 700 Hz, 1.5kHz, 3kHz, and 6kHz. The “Mid Hi Q” switch lets you narrow the bandwidth of the filter for surgical boosts or cuts.
The Rupert Neve 551 uses the same low feedback and Class A dsicrete electronics as intended in his vintage designs in order to avoid low level artefacts and harshness. Despite its nod to the past, the 551 uses modern designs and components that were not available at the time. Custom Wound inductors in the EQ section add rich beautiful and musical harmonics when they saturate and give the smooth, polished sound that has made Neve’s equipment so popular throughout the ages.
