For years everyone has been asking the question “when are Moog going to make a poly?!?” and the answer to that question is now.
The Moog One is the polyphonic powerhouse we’ve all been waiting for, a fully fledged analogue polysynth that has been years in development and has culminated in a breathtaking display of what a polyphonic synthesizer could and should be. Moog are not messing around with The One.
At its core resides a wealth of analogue circuitry that been meticulously tuned, optimised and refined to provide you with a premium experience you’d expect with something of this calibre. To compliment this beautifully crafted analogue architecture is an incredible UI that’s been custom built on the JUCE platform, giving you deep control, configurability and visual feedback to let you tweak away and build your sound.
One is available in both 16 and 8 voice options and for the One, Moog have developed a brand new VCO architecture called variable core, unlike any other VCO that Moog have developed before, this oscillator technology lets you modify, modulate and manipulate the waveform like nothing else. The classic Moog variable waveform types are included, but the new variable core VCO goes way deeper and has a much higher fidelity and dynamic content.
Each voice is comprised of three of these variable core oscillators, meaning on the 16-voice you can run up to 48 inter-modulated waves simultaneously, for rich and intense evolving textures and classic evolving pads.
This oscillator technology is perfectly complimented by the One’s dual filters. Yep, dual filters. Onboard you have the classic 24dB ladder filter circuit with four selectable slopes, overdrive and a topology that’s directly derived from the legacy modular circuits. The second filter is a state variable 12dB filter, yep….12dB state variable filter, because nothing sounds like 16 oscillators running into a SVF and with said SVF, you can easily craft tones from other notable polysynths.
Couple this with the ring mod, FM and all the other oscillator modulation options onboard and you have supremely versatile sound palette, that’s versatile, unique and highly customisable.
To cope with the incredible dynamic range the One is able to create, Moog have developed a specialised onboard compression circuit that gently controls the awesome amount of sound this thing can produce, this compression circuit can be used for subtle enhancement, create drastic compression effects or completely removed from the signal path.
And for effects? Well, Moog didn’t mess around here either. There’s a suite of effects from Eventide’s back category of lush reverbs, delays, pitch shifting and other modulation like chorus, phaser, flanger and the such. All of which can be modulated using the modulation matrix.
And speaking of modulation, there’s two assignable LFO’s per voice with variable waveforms, clock synchronisation and a seriously wide operating frequency. There’s also three envelopes per voice, which are freely assignable and includes looping modes, DADSR states, multiple retrigger options and much more.
The modulation matrix has been designed to provide the best balance of usability and configure-ability, each source and destination is touch and assign, so if you want to use envelope 2 to control VCF 1’s cut off frequency, just touch EG 2 and touch VCF 1’s cut off frequency.
With a synth that is as potentially complicated as the One, Moog decided to create a modulation system that was clear, easy to use but also incredibly deep and expressive. A lot of time was put into developing this and the end result shows that Moog really did create this thing with their users in mind.
And more mod cons? How about a dedicated high end AD/DA that lets you get all of the voices out of the synth simultaneously….without having to invest in another conversion stage? Yeah, the One has that too.
